De Cesaris made his Formula 1 debut in an Alfa Romeo at the 1980 Canadian Grand Prix when racing the same year for Ron Dennis‘ Project 4 Formula 2 team. He then followed Dennis to McLaren the following for his first full F1 season and schocked his boss with a succession of accidents and incidents. In 1982 he returned to the Alfa Romeo works team qualifying on pole position at Long Beach, but ended up hitting the wall. He stayed with Alfa in 1983, leading the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps before retiring. Then he signed a two-year-deal with Ligier and from them his career began to spiral, hopping through the ranks of Minardi, Brabham and Rial.
In 1989 he managed another two-year-deal, this time around with Scuderia Italia Dallara. Andrea finally seemed to have obtained the necessary maturity to be seen as a potential point scrorer and was hired Eddie Jordan for the 1991 season and came close to bagging second place behind Ayrton Senna’s McLaren at Spa. In 1992 and 93 he earned a reprieve with the Tyrrell team but didn’t impress. However, he was called throught 1994 as sub for a suspended Eddie Irvine at Jordan, then for the injured Karl Wendlinger at Sauber. By the end of his Formula 1 career he had driven in 208 races his best results werer two second places at the 1983 German and South African GP. His post-F1 life saw him dealing with currency trading and travelling the world taking part in windsurfing competitions.
Jo Vonlanthen’s made a brief appearance in Formula 1 after a couple of years in the European Formula 2 championship. His debut came at the wheel of a works Ensign at the 1975 International Trophy before switching to Williams for the Swiss GP at Dijon. His first World Championship race was the Austrian GP, also the last Grand Prix of his career. He returned to Formula 2 for 1976, but later concentrated on his A car trading business in Frauenfeld in Switzerland and also became a household name for Formula 1 show car rentals.
