Although the Mexican Grand Prix took place at the Circuito Hermanos Rodriguez, a totally different type of track than the previous race at the streets of Monaco, the McLaren-Honda domination would continue the same way.
Ayrton Senna took pole position by six-tenths from Alain Prost, Gerhard Berger was third fastest in his Ferrari ahead of Nelson Piquet’s Lotus, Michele Alboreto’s Ferrari, Satoru Nakajima’s Lotus and Eddie Cheever’s Arrows-Megatron.
The top 10 was completed by Sandro Nannini’s Benetton-Ford, Derek Warwick’s Arrows and Ivan Capelli’s Leyton House March. A huge accident destroyed Philippe Alliot’s Larrousse-Lola, thankfully the Frenchman escaped the massive shunt unscathed. On raceday Prost made a better start than Senna and took the lead with Piquet briefly ahead of Senna but Ayrton tracked Piquet through the first turn and reclaimed his position.
After just a few laps it became obvious that with Ron Dennis‘ policy of equal equipment for both drivers the two McLarens were extremely evenly matched and even the delay of spending a single lap behind Piquet left Senna with too much ground to recover. Berger overtook Piquet for third on lap 9 and the order then remained unchanged all the way to the finish. The McLaren team scored another 1-2 leaving Berger as the best of the rest for Ferrari and the only other man on the same lap as the McLarens.
Piquet ran fourth until the closing laps when his engine failed and so the place went to Alboreto while fifth and sixth belonged to Warwick and Cheever.
